Early Life
Ricardo Rosselló was born on March 7, 1979, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He comes from a family with a strong background in public service, being the son of former Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Rosselló. He pursued an intensive academic path in science and engineering, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He later obtained a Master’s degree and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan, followed by postdoctoral research in neurogenetics and stem cell science at Duke University. His early academic work focused on tissue engineering, stem cells, and molecular biology, laying the foundation for a career at the intersection of science, innovation, and public policy.
Career
Rosselló’s career spans academia, entrepreneurship, scientific research, and public service. He began as a researcher and entrepreneur, founding Auctoritas Labs and later co-founding Prosperous Biopharma, a biotechnology company focused on protein and peptide therapeutics and drug delivery systems. He also served as Chief Scientific Officer of BancoVida, Puerto Rico’s first cord blood stem cell bank, and conducted advanced research in biomaterials, stem cell engineering, and neurogenetics.
In academia, Rosselló served as a tenure-track professor and principal investigator at the University of Puerto Rico, where he led research on cancer, stem cells, and cell reprogramming, while teaching courses in biochemistry, immunology, and thermodynamics.
He entered politics as President of the New Progressive Party and was elected Governor of Puerto Rico in 2016, serving from 2017 to 2019. During his tenure, he pursued fiscal restructuring, economic reform, and modernization initiatives amid significant challenges, including a fiscal crisis and Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Following his governorship, he continued his involvement in public policy as a member of Puerto Rico’s Congressional Delegation, advocating for statehood.
In the private and academic sectors, Rosselló served as CEO of Prosperous Biopharma and as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Visionary Officer at the Regenerative Medicine Institute in Costa Rica. He is also an adjunct professor at George Mason University, teaching crisis leadership and reform dynamics.
